Different Types Of Breast Implants

Saline Breast Implants

Saline implants continued to be allowed after the silicone ones were restricted.  They are a silicone shell filled with a saline (salt-water) solution.  This is a safe option because saline is easily absorbed into the body if the implant should develop a leak.

Saline implants are available in two different shapes, round breast implants and anatomical breast implants, which are also known as teardrop breast implants.

Teardrop Breast Implants

The anatomical breast implants are sort of pear shaped, with the idea being they more closely resemble the shape of a breast and therefore look more natural.

Round Breast Implants

Many surgeons recommend the round breast implants. They claim that although they can give the top of the breast a more rounded (and therefore fake) look, they do “settle” in to the breast eventually and give it a natural look.

The benefit of the round over the teardrop implant is the round implant can “flip” (which is something that can happen) without changing the look of the breast.  If a teardrop implant flips, surgery is necessary to re-position it.

As well as being available in two shapes, saline implants are available in two different textures, smooth and textured.

Smooth Breast Implants

Smooth breast implants have the benefit of feeling more natural in women with thin skin or minimal breast tissue.

Textured Breast Implants

Textured breast implants are thought to reduce shifting as well as prevent capsular contracture.  Capsular contracture is the hardening of breast tissue around the implant and is discussed along with other risks of augmentation surgery.

The two main companies in North America that produce breast implants (both saline and cohesive gel) are Allergan and Mentor.
